More about the theme . . .

The use of hot stones for healing dates back to ancient times. There are historical accounts confirming that the Chinese used heated stones more than 2,000 years ago as a means of improving the function of internal organs. Stone massage was present in Ancient Greece and Rome too. Stone massage treatments were used with the combination of Roman-bath. The benefits of massage treatment were combined with hot immersion baths and the cooling effects of marble stone and cold pools.

Stone massage

Indian hot and cold lava stone massage is a form of massage therapy that follows the same principles of Swedish massage with the addition of heated and cooled stones, which helps lead to deep relaxation.  The modern-day treatment was first introduced in the United States of America in 1993 by Mary Nelson.

Adding heat to specific areas on the body enhances the feelings of relaxation and peace. The heat of the stones warm and relax the muscles, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure. The cooled stones are used on the limbs.

Heated smooth, flat stones are placed on key points on the body, which are usually made of basalt, a type of rock that is rich in iron, so they retain heat. The massage therapist is also holding the stones and using them to massage certain areas of the body. The different temperature of the stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system.
